The Data-Driven Reporting Project announces awards for Spring 2023

Thirteen news organizations and freelancers will receive more than $500,000 in funding

The Data-Driven Reporting Project is awarding more than $500,000 to support 13 new document- or data-driven projects. Eleven of the awards will go to U.S.-based organizations and freelancers and two to Canadian projects.

The Data-Driven Reporting Project is funded by the Google News Initiative in partnership with the Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications. Our goal is to award funds to support investigative journalists working for local news outlets and outlets serving underrepresented communities across the U.S. and Canada.

“Medill has a long history of elevating the kind of deep, critical reporting that undergirds democracy,” said Medill Dean Charles Whitaker. “We have already seen powerful results from the DDRP and we are grateful for Google’s support.”

The DDRP asked a panel of 10 expert reviewers to help evaluate each application. Medill will provide specialized training, expertise and resources to the award recipients. Google played no role in the selection of jurors or individual projects. Applications for Fall 2023 awards are expected to open in September.

“We are thrilled with the success of the DDRP’s 2022 cohort. We are excited to see what this next round of awardees can do to help their communities,” said Jeremy Gilbert, Medill professor and Knight Chair in Digital Media Strategy who founded the DDRP.

Since the launch of the program, The Data-Driven Reporting Project has awarded nearly $1.5 million to 35 news organizations since its inaugural round in 2022. Several projects from awardees have already won national, state and local recognition
